the late soviet union was aesthetic as fuck, i'd describe it as 'retro futuristic', you had brutalist architecture, you had eery pop music, cheap imitation western goods, shit was wild.
Lots of great filmaking and writing came out of the era too from the 60s to late 80s — tarkovsky or Věra Chytilová, the novels by the stragatsky brothers , not to mention the techno music.
actually a lot of developement happened in the USSR in terms of cybernetics and networking, but most of that was subsumed in the western centric money grab that happened after the fall.
Of course, not to downplay the harsh realities of living in the USSR, not even gonna go into that, but any society has it's high and low points
